Synopsis

Widely regarded as one of cinema’s most powerful and politically charged masterpieces, Gillo Pontecorvo’s The Battle of Algiers is newly remastered from 4K-restored original negative and presented in its most complete and authentic form to date.

Recreating the Algerian struggle for independence from French occupation and depicting the brutal acts committed by both sides, it is a gripping, thought-provoking chronicle of resistance, repression – now more relevant today than ever..!

Among the wealth of exclusive extras are in-depth interviews with Gillo PontecorvoSaadi Yacef, the producer, actor, and former FLN leader whose own experiences inspired the story. A featurette with Marco Pontecorvo, filmmaker and son of the director, shows his supervision of the meticulous 4K restoration – ensuring that every frame preserves the raw, grain-rich documentary style originally envisioned by his father Gillo Pontecorvo’s monumental work.

The release also features exclusive appreciations by celebrated filmmakers Ken Loach and Paul Greengrass, each reflecting on the film’s profound influence on cinema and on history.

Winner of the Golden Lion at the 1966 Venice Film Festival and nominated decades later for Best Restored Film at the same festival, this release reaffirms The Battle of Algiers as one of the most vital and influential works in film history. Music by Ennio Morricone.
